The X-Drive 8.0 from Salomon is a marvelous front side carver ski intended for upper intermediate to expert skiers. This ski has an 80mm waist with Salomon’s All Terrain Rocker which makes this ski very versatile for a wide range of snow conditions and terrain. Whether you are strictly a groomer skier (Deer Valley folks we’re looking at you) or you like a solid blend of on/off piste runs, the X-Drive will perform to maximum capacity. This ski has a Titanal and basalt layers to help with stability and dampening when skiing fast so don’t be afraid to let go of the brakes on these skis. The XT10 bindings come mounted to this ski with a DIN range from 3-10 and is fully adjustable to most boot sizes from 257-380mm.
Square Tail: These skis have a square shaped tail, which adds stability to turns on hardpack as well as very steep terrain. Probably not a park ski, though 🙂
Titanium Layer: A thin, but strong layer of Titanium sits under the topsheet of this ski. Not only does it make the ski stronger, it keeps it lighter than other metals, and also creates a dampening effect for the ski. This means it rides smoother over bumpy terrain.
Skier Ability: Advanced to Expert: Skipping the blue runs to get to the black runs, but sometimes a little cautious when it gets very steep, or some hesitation when your buddy says, ”You just have to clear those rocks or else you’re toast.”
Tip Rocker: This refers to the early rising of the tip to get the ski on top of the soft snow, rather than pushing through it. When the skis are held with the bases together, it will look like the tips are bent, and spread away from eachother. Tip rocker also helps skiers pivot the skis, making tight trees remarkably easy, and gives the ski a surf-like feel.
Metal Tip Protectors: These skis have rugged tip protectors made of metal that will help fight against chipping and damage to the tips, which is both a performance and cosmetic benefit.
Basalt Layers: This ski sandwiches basalt around the wood core, which is lighter than metals like aluminum or titanium, but still offers extra stability and dampness.
Ideal Target Skier: East Coast Hardpack Lover: This is an excellent ski for East Coast skiers that ski aggressively on the hardpack while still getting off trail a bit. West Coast skiers: this is a carving ski that should only be brought out when the powder is gone and its time to rip the groomers.
X-Chassis Tech: Carbon/Polymide diagonal reinforcement in the middle of the ski that increases torsional rigidity and prevents twisting when the ski flexes during a turn. This technology dramatically improves edge grip and stability while skiing at high speeds.
Tip and Tail Protectors: Plastic protectors on the tip and tail increase the durability of the gear tenfold, and when someone says its dorky, just tell them that they are for nose and tail grabs, sort of like those old school skateboards.
Wood Core: The standard core which has throughout time provided the best performance and durability. Each model may have it’s own density level to help define flex and maximum speed but every wood core ski will be solid.
Honey Comb Tip: More Float, Less Flop. This ski has a super light honeycomb/Koroyd insert, reinforced with ABS. Less weight at the extremities with increased dampening from Koroyd material which dramatically increases maneuverability and ease of steering on rockered skis.
